Erimas Alemu opened Cafe Abyssinia in 2010 to bring Ethiopian cooking to Magazine Street. Since then, the restaurant has shared injera, berbere, and a warm welcome with New Orleans.

After moving from Chicago, Erimas Alemu saw New Orleans had no Ethiopian restaurant. He opened Cafe Abyssinia in 2010 to share that cooking here.
The Magazine Street room
Cafe Abyssinia opened on Magazine Street as New Orleans’ first family-owned traditional Ethiopian restaurant. It still feels like a cozy Uptown neighborhood spot.
What’s on the platter
Injera anchors the meal, with berbere, lentils, greens, tibs, and slow-simmered stews around it. Most dishes are made to be shared.
